Chin Mee Chin Confectionery @ Katong - The Old-School Confectionary

After a hiatus of 5-6 years, I returned to this classic confectionary, introducing my girlfriend to the long-lost cravings of my past. Luckily, we found parking around 10 am, a potential challenge during peak hours. True to tradition, we queued for 15-20 minutes before the friendly staff ushered us to a table. The nostalgic ambiance, marked by old-school flooring tiles and furniture, still lingered. Serendipitously seated in a cozy corner, it was an Instagram-friendly spot. (Not sure GF going to kill me for putting her in the post) Approaching the cashier counter, I ordered my go-to Kaya Toast set with "Added Butter" and sought recommendations for two other buns—Laksa and Otah—suggested by the cashier. Now, onto the review: Coffee: Recalling my visit 5-6 years ago, I found their coffee average, but post-revamp, there's a noticeable improvement. The aroma is inviting, and the flavor is much more satisfying. Kaya Kuyu Bun: The recipe for the bun seems to have evolved. M...

Seng Kee Black Herbal Chicken Soup @ Bedok - The Legendary Yo Ji Mee Sua

Renowned among food enthusiasts in the Bedok and Tampines vicinity, Yo Ji Mee Sua holds legendary status. Having been a patron since my teenage years and now a fully grown, round individual, this dish remains a cherished favorite for both my mum and girlfriend. In January 2024, I revisited to check for any price adjustments due to GST, and fortunately, the cost remains consistent with previous visits. Upon ordering, a beeper is provided, and patrons await its ring before collecting the dish. Arriving around 6.30pm, it took less than 6 minutes to collection. Now, let's delve into the review: Yo Ji Mee Sua: The soy savory essence and herbal richness are what captivate most food enthusiasts about the stall's broth. The infusion of sweetness from pork, liver, and kidney into the soup is genuinely satisfying. The Mee Sua is expertly cooked—striking a balance between not being too soft and retaining a mild, satisfying bite. The pork slices boast a starch coating, contributing to a...

Dian Xiao Er @ Downtown East - Herbalicious Roasted Duck

Encountered some chefs from Dian Xiao Er at a pub who passionately recommended their dishes, prompting a visit to their Whitesand outlet. Full transparency: I paid for the meal, and here's an honest review. Arriving on a Thursday evening, we were promptly seated with no queue. The waiter directed us to order by ticking the set menu manually or opting for ala carte through a QR scan. Caught off guard by the lack of a set price indication, both my girlfriend and I resorted to googling their website for details. Images download from Dian Xiao Er Website. We settled on the "Healthier Set," and the dishes arrived swiftly, served with a smile. Now, onto the review: Angelica Herb Roasted Duck: A highlight among all the dishes. Tender meat (Drum & Thigh area) with a mild herbal aroma. The sauce, when drizzled over the rice, is heavenly. Personally felt the skin lacked crispiness but the herbal and tender meat make up for it. Soup of the Day: Fish maw soup that stood out for...

Xiang Ji Lor Mee - Ingredient Packed Tasty Lor Mee at Old Airport Road

"Hawker stall "Xiang Ji Lor Mee" is one of the three renowned Lor Mee stalls at Old Airport Hawker Centre. Arriving during the bustling lunch hour, I was pleasantly surprised to find only five people in the queue. Joining the queue, it took me approximately 12 minutes before I could place my order. Opting for the $5 version, being a self-proclaimed 'Ah Pui' (Chubby Guy), I appreciated the added ingredients, especially the Shredded Batang fish. Interestingly, the stall still offers a $3 version, but note that it doesn't include the Shredded Batang Fish. Now, let's dive into the review: Gravy: A delightful mix of vinegar and chili elevates the dish to pure happiness. The spicy kick from chili sambal and chili padi, the tanginess from the vinegar, and the savory touch from the five-spice dark sauce create a symphony of flavors. It's worth noting that the gravy tends to get a bit watery towards the end. Noodles: No alkaline taste detected. Although sl...

401 BBQ @ Hougang - The Tasty Barbeque Seafood Stall with Chilli Many Many!

This has become our go-to supper spot, primarily due to its 24/7 operation and consistently decent food offerings throughout the entire coffeeshop. After a considerable hiatus, I returned to find the place refurbished, with the stalls repositioned behind the coffee counter. As is often the case with coffeeshop renovations, prices have seen an increase. Nevertheless, at $8.50, their set comprising rice, egg, and two proteins still falls within the realm of reasonable pricing. Opting for the single set with stingray and squid to share, we supplemented our order with additional dishes from neighboring stalls. After a 15-minute wait, signaled by the beeper, we swiftly collected our selections. The standout feature here is undoubtedly the Sambal Chilli. One can't help but wonder if they're giving the chilli away for free, given its generous application that allows each mouthful to be glazed with flavorful heat. The chilli leans towards the savory side, avoiding an overwhelming spi...

L32 Handmade Noodles @ Tampines 1 - QQ Noodles with Super Spicy Chilli Ban Mian

In the midst of a rainy January day in Singapore, my girlfriend and I found ourselves yearning for a warm, comforting meal. Since we were in Tampines Central, she suggested the renowned Ban Mian at Tampines 1, a subsidiary of the legendary L32 Ban Mian in Geylang. Upon arrival, we were met with the familiar sight of a lengthy queue. Patiently, we waited for about 20 minutes before finally collecting our dishes. We ordered the pork balls noodles and Ban Mian dried version with an added chicken cutlet. For the soup version, we were treated to a delectably savory and slightly sweet broth, complemented by a touch of raw fresh egg. In the dried version, my girlfriend noted that the sauce leaned towards the sweet side for her taste. The Ban Mian noodles, thicker than those at regular stalls, maintained a satisfying texture. The unique feature of almost raw egg drew mixed opinions, as I found it acceptable with its 20% cooked consistency, while my girlfriend wasn't a fan. The chicken cu...
