After a hiatus of 5-6 years, I returned to this classic confectionary, introducing my girlfriend to the long-lost cravings of my past. Luckily, we found parking around 10 am, a potential challenge during peak hours.
True to tradition, we queued for 15-20 minutes before the friendly staff ushered us to a table. The nostalgic ambiance, marked by old-school flooring tiles and furniture, still lingered. Serendipitously seated in a cozy corner, it was an Instagram-friendly spot.
Approaching the cashier counter, I ordered my go-to Kaya Toast set with "Added Butter" and sought recommendations for two other buns—Laksa and Otah—suggested by the cashier.
Now, onto the review:
Coffee: Recalling my visit 5-6 years ago, I found their coffee average, but post-revamp, there's a noticeable improvement. The aroma is inviting, and the flavor is much more satisfying.
Kaya Kuyu Bun: The recipe for the bun seems to have evolved. My memory painted a picture of a tougher texture, but today's bun is notably softer and moister. The kaya is delicious, and for fellow Butter Freaks like me, adding butter imparts a delightful, buttery flavor. A must-order dish!
Soft Boil Eggs: Cooked to perfection, hitting the sweet spot for soft-boiled eggs.
Laksa Bun: Soft buns bursting with laksa flavors—a surprising depth of aromatic and spicy notes that surpass even a bowl of laksa.
Otah Bun: Almost didn't order it due to my girlfriend's aversion to otah, but she ended up enjoying it. A treat for spice and chili lovers, this one won't disappoint.
Overall Verdict: Retaining an old-school coffee house vibe, this place offers delightful old-school Kaya Kuyu toast and buns bursting with classic flavors. A visit here is undoubtedly worthwhile.
