Seng Kee Black Herbal Chicken Soup @ Bedok - The Legendary Yo Ji Mee Sua

Renowned among food enthusiasts in the Bedok and Tampines vicinity, Yo Ji Mee Sua holds legendary status. Having been a patron since my teenage years and now a fully grown, round individual, this dish remains a cherished favorite for both my mum and girlfriend.

In January 2024, I revisited to check for any price adjustments due to GST, and fortunately, the cost remains consistent with previous visits.

Upon ordering, a beeper is provided, and patrons await its ring before collecting the dish. Arriving around 6.30pm, it took less than 6 minutes to collection.

Now, let's delve into the review:

Yo Ji Mee Sua: The soy savory essence and herbal richness are what captivate most food enthusiasts about the stall's broth. The infusion of sweetness from pork, liver, and kidney into the soup is genuinely satisfying.

The Mee Sua is expertly cooked—striking a balance between not being too soft and retaining a mild, satisfying bite.

The pork slices boast a starch coating, contributing to a smooth texture. The pig liver and kidney are skillfully prepared, maintaining the right level of tenderness.

Overall Verdict: A patron since the 90s, I've witnessed a slight lightening in the soup's taste, but it remains exceptional. Gone are those fresh steam fish dishes but the famous Yo Ji Mee Sua still remains. Priced at $4.50 in 2024, this ingredient-packed dish with a flavorful soup is a rare find. As someone who has frequented the stall for decades, it's safe to say that I'll continue returning for the unique hawker delight that is Yo Ji Mee Sua!

Koung's Wanton Mee @ Geylang East - The Famous WTM Shifted Location

I've been a loyal customer of Koung's Wanton Mee for years, ever since they were situated along Geylang Road. Today marks my first visit to their new location in Geylang East. Upon arrival at the bustling coffeeshop around 12:15 PM, it was evident that many diners were eager to savor their wanton mee. After a brief wait, I managed to secure a seat and promptly ordered a bowl of the $6 version, opting for extra noodles. However, the waiting process proved to be quite challenging, as I ended up waiting a total of 45 minutes. Regrettably, this delay made me nearly 40 minutes late for my lunch break at work. Now, onto the review: Noodles: Unfortunately, the noodles fell short of my expectations. They were slightly clumped together, indicating that the water used for boiling them may not have been changed. While the texture was acceptable, the distinctive lard flavor that I remembered from previous visits seemed lacking. Char Siew: The char siew, which was previously marinat...

Shi Nian Pig Trotter Rice @ Chai Chee - Meat That's Tender and Fats Melt in Mouth!

Formerly known as Ling Ji and now rebranded as Shi Nian, this stall is a go-to spot for delicious pig trotter rice. Located in a food court presumably owned by the "Bai Nian" brand, I always find myself torn between two favorite dishes here, Bai Nian Yong Tau Foo and Shi Niang Pig Trotter Rice. Arriving around 7:40 PM, I was pleased to find no queue and promptly ordered two bowls, one with more fatty meat for my girlfriend's preference and one with lean meat for myself. **Fatty Meat Bowl** The lady serving us was friendly and generously accommodated our request for extra chili. Our order arrived in less than 2 minutes, allowing us to dig in swiftly after snapping a quick photo. **Lean Meat Bowl** Now, onto the review: Pork Trotter: Cooked to perfection, the meat was tender, and the fats melted in the mouth. The dish strikes a balance, avoiding an overly salty taste. It's truly some of the best-braised pork available at such an affordable price in a hawker setting. P...

Dian Xiao Er @ Downtown East - Herbalicious Roasted Duck

Encountered some chefs from Dian Xiao Er at a pub who passionately recommended their dishes, prompting a visit to their Whitesand outlet. Full transparency: I paid for the meal, and here's an honest review. Arriving on a Thursday evening, we were promptly seated with no queue. The waiter directed us to order by ticking the set menu manually or opting for ala carte through a QR scan. Caught off guard by the lack of a set price indication, both my girlfriend and I resorted to googling their website for details. Images download from Dian Xiao Er Website. We settled on the "Healthier Set," and the dishes arrived swiftly, served with a smile. Now, onto the review: Angelica Herb Roasted Duck: A highlight among all the dishes. Tender meat (Drum & Thigh area) with a mild herbal aroma. The sauce, when drizzled over the rice, is heavenly. Personally felt the skin lacked crispiness but the herbal and tender meat make up for it. Soup of the Day: Fish maw soup that stood out for...
