Xiang Ji Lor Mee - Ingredient Packed Tasty Lor Mee at Old Airport Road

 


"Hawker stall "Xiang Ji Lor Mee" is one of the three renowned Lor Mee stalls at Old Airport Hawker Centre. Arriving during the bustling lunch hour, I was pleasantly surprised to find only five people in the queue. Joining the queue, it took me approximately 12 minutes before I could place my order.




Opting for the $5 version, being a self-proclaimed 'Ah Pui' (Chubby Guy), I appreciated the added ingredients, especially the Shredded Batang fish. Interestingly, the stall still offers a $3 version, but note that it doesn't include the Shredded Batang Fish.




Now, let's dive into the review:

Gravy: A delightful mix of vinegar and chili elevates the dish to pure happiness. The spicy kick from chili sambal and chili padi, the tanginess from the vinegar, and the savory touch from the five-spice dark sauce create a symphony of flavors. It's worth noting that the gravy tends to get a bit watery towards the end.

Noodles: No alkaline taste detected. Although slightly overcooked, it could be attributed to the time it took to capture the perfect picture.

Ingredients: The fried Batang Fish steals the spotlight with its savory and chewy texture. The dish boasts a variety of ingredients, including a halved hard-boiled egg, fish cake, wuxiang, pork belly, garlic, and more. It's a flavorful and ingredient-packed ensemble.



Value: In January 2024, it's quite a rarity to find a hawker stall offering $3 dishes in Singapore. This place, however, manages to do so. While I opted for the $5 version, my colleagues couldn't believe the abundance of fish and ingredients in a dish of that price. The value is exceptional, especially when considering the current market prices for Batang Fish.



Overall Verdict: How can one complain when a $5 meal fills the tummy so satisfyingly? The taste is delightful, the price is just right, and the queue wasn't overly long during my visit to the hawker centre. Definitely worth a try!

  Formerly known as Ling Ji and now rebranded as Shi Nian, this stall is a go-to spot for delicious pig trotter rice. Located in a food court presumably owned by the "Bai Nian" brand, I always find myself torn between two favorite dishes here, Bai Nian Yong Tau Foo and Shi Niang Pig Trotter Rice.
