Formerly known as Ling Ji and now rebranded as Shi Nian, this stall is a go-to spot for delicious pig trotter rice.
Located in a food court presumably owned by the "Bai Nian" brand, I always find myself torn between two favorite dishes here, Bai Nian Yong Tau Foo and Shi Niang Pig Trotter Rice.
Arriving around 7:40 PM, I was pleased to find no queue and promptly ordered two bowls, one with more fatty meat for my girlfriend's preference and one with lean meat for myself.
The lady serving us was friendly and generously accommodated our request for extra chili.
Our order arrived in less than 2 minutes, allowing us to dig in swiftly after snapping a quick photo.
Now, onto the review:
Pork Trotter: Cooked to perfection, the meat was tender, and the fats melted in the mouth. The dish strikes a balance, avoiding an overly salty taste. It's truly some of the best-braised pork available at such an affordable price in a hawker setting.
Pork Cake: Offering a texture akin to fishcake, this adds another dimension to the already flavorful braised rice dish.
Xian Cai (Preserved Vegetable): The slight sourness of this vegetable provides a refreshing contrast to the richness of the fatty meat.
I find this dish to be a harmonious blend of flavors and textures, with the tender fatty meat, the added dimension of the pork cake, and the balanced savory notes complemented by the preserved vegetables.
Overall, I've lost count of the number of times I've frequented this place in a year. It's undoubtedly a must-try dish in the Chai Chee area.
And let's not forget about the Yong Tau Foo in the same food court! Another gem worth trying, but that's a story for another day. Cheers!
