Embarking on my second venture to "Yat Ka Yan" dessert haven, I succumbed to the occasional sweet tooth yearning. The visit on January 20, 2024, a Saturday, unfolded with the familiar scene of joining a lengthy queue, patiently waiting for about 15 minutes before reaching the cashier counter to place our orders.
Notably, a festive change embraced the establishment, with a red-themed menu in anticipation of the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations. However, my quest for the black sesame paste hit an unexpected obstacle. The cashier shared that the term "BLACK" sesame was eschewed due to its association with darkness, and in the spirit of auspiciousness for Chinese New Year, the dish was temporarily removed from the menu until the festivities concluded. A stroke of luck granted me the opportunity to savor the last serving of black sesame paste before the hiatus. The culinary journey continued with other delightful selections—Cai Pok Chee Cheong Fan and Durian Chendol.
Took about 5 minutes before the dishes was served to our table.
Now, the review:
Black Sesame Paste: Having ordered this dessert on both of my visits, it stands as a testament to its tasteful allure. The sweetness, smoothness, and aromatic sesame flavor linger on the palate, firmly establishing itself as a recommended delight.
Durian Chendol: While the exact durian breed eluded my discernment, its profile leaned towards the intensely sweet variety. Handcrafted chendol, rich in coconut milk and gula melaka, accompanied by soft red beans, delivered an unequivocal punch of delight. Highly recommended for durian enthusiasts seeking a sugar rush.
Cai Pok Chee Cheong Fan (CCF): A novel twist to traditional Chee Cheong Fan, the addition of Cai Pok (Preserved Raddish) elevated the dish to a new level. The harmonious blend of light soy sauce, savory Cai Pok fragrance, and the moist, soft Chee Cheong Fan yielded pure satisfaction. An audacious petition might even propose the universal adoption of Cai Pok in all Chee Cheong Fan renditions!
Building on my first visit's recommendations:
Mini Soup Set of 3: Comprising smaller bowls of Peanut Paste, Logan Soup with Tang Yuan, and Black Sesame Paste (to be substituted during CNY), this trio exemplifies a delightful variety.
Orh Ni: A thick and smooth yam paste paired with coconut milk, this dessert is a must-try for those seeking a delightful fusion of flavors.
Overall Verdict: "Yat Ka Yan" is undeniably a haven for dessert enthusiasts craving a diverse range of local delicacies. A visit here promises a delightful gastronomic journey through a spectrum of delectable treats. Ho Jiak!
